We planned an expedition to southern Slovakia to Friday to Sunday 8/11 - 8/13/2006, but our plans had to be altered - Jirka could not take part and wheather forecast was very contrary, so we had to shorten our program to one day. We arrived to Senec, where our hosts (Miro, Imro) live, only two (Pavel, Radim). We spent Friday evening together at recreation area "Slnečná Jezera" and slept in a gymnastic hall of local school. On Saturday, together with another member of historical club "Tatranci" Jano, we moved by car to Nové Zámky.
However, the memorial of fallen members of 7th militial battalion in Bajč was our first stop. This forgotten, uncared memorial had been discovered by Tatranci one year over. They pressed local authorities to renovate it. We wanted to see, what happened during the year. We were very surprised! (from left Imro, Jano, Pavel, Miro)
We visited railway bridge in Nové Zámky, where mjr. Jiří Jelínek has fallen in 1919 during operation to relieve group of Czechoslovak soldiers cought (after the bridge had been blown up) on the opposite side of rier (6/20/1919).
When we arrived to Komárno, it started to rain. However, we walked through the Slovak part of Komárno.
Statue of General Štefánik in Komárno.
Memorial of Soviet soldiers fallen during liberation of Komarno area at the end of WW2.
Komárno is divided by tha rivar Danube to Slovak and Hungarian part. Unfortunatelly, when we entered Hungarian side, the rain was so heavy, that we had to hide and later go back, without seeing the Hungarian part of the city.
Another divided city - Sturovo/Ostrihom, with it`s great cathedral, former archbishop`s seat.
On the Hungarian side, it started to rain again. This time it was not as hard as before. View of Slovak part of the city from Hungarian part.
The cathedral is really huge. Notice people beneath the arch. I am confident it had to be a mosque once, but I was not able to confirm it.
On our way back, we have noticed burrial place of Soviet soldiers fallen during liberation of this area.
Unfortunatelly, there are no photos documenting our night adventure with empty car`s tank and sitting together with very cheap beer Pandur (2.90 SK including the bottle:-)
